Mrs. Hunter-Ford knows better than to argue with her strict husband, and when told, lays across his lap to receive her punishment, she does exactly what she is told. She too, is given a sound bare bottom spanking, and a severe dose of the strap, but it is when she bends over for the cane, that we see just how strict Mr. Hunter-Ford can be.   After the dismissal of the last maid and their young ward, who was sent off to convent school (the pair previously dealt with in 'Alice and the Maid') Sir John and his strict housekeeper, Bainbridge are missing the domestic help that they provided. He has now arranged to take on two new young ladies, Sophie and Eleanor. His brother, the local magistrate, has conditionally sentenced them to a year in the reformatory for stealing, but Sir John has made an agreement that, in return for them performing household duties, they will instead be looked after, given an education, food and shelter, fine clothes and their sentence commuted. But soon after arriving, it becomes clear that they have not been cured of their kleptomania or mischievous ways. They are first spanked with hand and then by hairbrush for reading his private letters.
They are then soundly strapped for spying on Sir John and Bainbridge's private liaisons at night. Eleanor steals Sir John's gold fob watch, which they both take to the local jeweller's shop to sell, in an attempt to raise funds for their planned escape, but he soon discovers it is missing. They are interrogated in his study and blatantly deny all knowledge, until he produces it in front of them. His friend the jeweller has recognised it and returned it. He gives them both a good caning across his desk for lying and for stealing, before they are sent to bed. Soon afterward, Bainbridge discovers the theft of her favourite ring as well, and their room is searched. It is discovered under Sophie's pillow this time. He wants to send them both to the reformatory there and then, but Bainbridge persuades him that their work is needed round the house. He relents and they receive an extra caning lying across the bed with nightdresses raised.
